Lightbits Achieves First NVMe/TCP Storage with VMware Certification for Azure Cloud

Offering fast, low latency storage for VMware on Microsoft Azure

Hello everyone! We’re excited to share that Lightbits has achieved VMware certification of our high-performance, NVMe over TCP storage solution for Microsoft Azure VMware Solution (AVS). This certification validates Lightbit’s ability to deliver high-performance, scalable, enterprise-class external storage for virtualized workloads running on AVS.

Many organizations want to migrate performance-sensitive VMware workloads to AVS but face challenges in scaling capacity and performance to run storage-intensive mission-critical applications. While AVS provides a familiar VMware environment in Azure, there is a need for high-performance external storage options that can lift and shift workloads like SQL and NoSQL databases.

Lightbits overcomes these hurdles by delivering scalable high-performance with sub-millisecond tail latency purpose-built for VMware environments on Azure. Our software-defined storage architecture aggregates local NVMe SSDs of Azure lsv3 or lasv3 VMs into shared pools and carves out volumes for AVS, combining NVMe performance with centralized storage elasticity and data services.

Validated for Optimal VMware Integration

Lightbits is proud to obtain VMware certification for our solution for AVS in coordination with the VMware certification team. Certification testing leveraged the internal VIVa test suite.

Achieving VMware certification required successfully validating core integration and functionality aspects through a focused certification test process including:

  • Connectivity tests to validate NVMe/TCP integration between Lightbits and AVS
  • Storage provisioning and VMFS datastore operations
  • Multipathing and high availability
  • Resiliency testing via simulated failover and fault injection

In addition to the official VMware certification testing, Lightbits performed rigorous internal validations spanning:

  • Control plane functionality and management at scale
  • Performance benchmarking across real-world workloads and access patterns
  • Cluster scale testing under contention

Completing the intensive VMware certification process underscores Lightbit’s ability to deliver enterprise-grade performance, availability, and scale required for production workloads on AVS.

Lightbits is also a VMware Technology Alliance Partner and Day 0 design partner for in-box support of NVMe/TCP. Lightbits has been collaborating extensively with VMware on the development and testing of the new vSphere NVMe/TCP feature since 2021. This joint effort enabled Lightbits to optimize its solution for vSphere integration. Lightbits was also the first NVMe/TCP storage certified for on-prem vSphere 7.0U3

With Lightbits VMware-certified storage, organizations can modernize their most demanding workloads on AVS. Avoid lock-in and maximize flexibility by provisioning high-performance VMFS datastores for AVS while leveraging Azure’s scale and ecosystem
