Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) is AWS high performance block storage for Amazon EC2 instances, providing low-latency and high-throughput for database applications, file systems, and more.
There are many block storage on AWS solutions. Lightbits delivers enterprise-grade, resilient block storage that is easy to deploy and use. Amazon S3, in contrast, is object storage, suitable for storing and retrieving any amount of data but not meant to work as the underlying storage for an operating system or application that requires block-level storage.
Lightbits Block Storage on AWS:
Lightbits delivers a range of enterprise solutions lacking in EBS, such as multi-tenancy, quality of service (QoS), user defined
replication, and failure domains. Data is protected from single instance failure by replication of data across instances. In addition Lightbits’ auto-healing functionality replaces instances in the cluster which failed due to AWS infrastructure failure. Snapshots, clones, and restores are included in the Lightbits software without any additional fees.
Amazon EBS Volumes:
Stored within an Availability Zone and automatically replicated within that zone to prevent data loss from hardware failures. Additionally, EBS provides different volume types, like SSD-backed and HDD-backed options, allowing users to choose the optimal balance of performance and cost while benefiting from high durability and availability.
Amazon EBS:
Select the correct EBS volume type based on your workload requirements (e.g., Provisioned IOPS SSD for I/O-intensive databases) ensuring the EC2 instance type is compatible with the intended IOPS and throughput levels. On AWS, you will pay for provisioned IOPS.
